Madrid Housing Protest Grows After Elderly Woman’s Eviction
“It’s tough, but this is growing. With every minute, every hour that passes, there are more tents, more people, more determination, more hope, more expectations and more strength to achieve everything we set out to do,” Gonzalo Alvarez, a spokesman for the Madrid tenants’ union behind the demonstration, said Monday.
The number of tents at the square was estimated at around 350, reflecting the growing size of the protest.
The demonstration began after 87-year-old Maricarmen was evicted from the apartment where she had spent 71 years of her life.
She received a monthly pension of €1,400 ($1,590) and had continued paying her rent and household bills, which together amounted to roughly €500 each month, according to reports.
A property company purchased the apartment in 2018 and subsequently sought to increase the monthly rent to €2,650. During negotiations, the company lowered the proposed amount to €1,650, which remained above Maricarmen’s monthly pension.
Police forcibly carried out the eviction on Wednesday as hundreds of demonstrators gathered in an attempt to stop authorities from removing her. Reports said she has remained in a hospital since the eviction.
