Musk Abandons Plans to Launch Third Political Party
The billionaire entrepreneur, who heads Tesla and SpaceX, had previously unveiled intentions to create the America Party in July, positioning it as an alternative to the entrenched Democratic and Republican establishments. However, sources now indicate that Musk is shifting focus back to his businesses and pulling away from overt political engagement to avoid “alienating powerful Republicans.”
The report notes that Musk’s foray into politics last year—most notably his financial backing of Donald Trump and close alignment with GOP figures—coincided with a downturn in attention to his companies. Advisors reportedly pressed him to leave Washington and return to his core enterprises.
Despite shelving the third-party venture, Musk is reportedly keeping lines open with Vice President JD Vance, a leading voice in Trump’s MAGA movement. People familiar with the discussions say Musk is wary that continuing with an independent party could jeopardize his rapport with Vance, who is viewed as a potential frontrunner in the 2028 presidential race.
In fact, media reports Musk has privately weighed backing Vance financially in a future campaign, having already poured nearly $300 million into supporting Trump and Republican causes during the 2024 election cycle.
Trump, who is constitutionally barred from a third term, has nonetheless raised the possibility of circumventing that rule. The report characterizes Musk’s current political posture as an “eerie silence,” in stark contrast to his earlier vocal presence.
Vance, speaking to the conservative outlet Gateway Pundit, dismissed the idea of a post-Trump realignment, saying, “So my hope is that by the time of the (2026) midterms, he’s kind of come back into the fold.”
The 2026 midterm elections, which will determine control of dozens of seats in Congress, are widely seen as a barometer for the administration’s strength. For now, Musk’s third-party ambitions appear to be on indefinite hold.
