Russia Backs Reliable Security Assurances for Ukraine
Speaking at a joint news briefing with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, in Moscow, Lavrov responded to recent reports suggesting that Great Britain, France, and Germany are working to establish collective security arrangements for Ukraine.
Lavrov emphasized that Moscow is not opposed to such guarantees, as long as they are dependable.
Lavrov also referred to earlier discussions that took place in April 2022 during initial peace negotiations held in Istanbul, where representatives from Kyiv presented foundational ideas for resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
These suggestions were intended to create a long-term and stable resolution to the war.
According to Lavrov, Ukraine’s delegation offered to adopt key principles in any future deal, which included a commitment to remain outside of NATO and other military alliances, and a declaration of Ukraine’s neutrality and non-nuclear stance.
He went on to state that Russia is open to the idea of Ukraine receiving security assurances, provided they are granted equally and involve participation from countries like China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.
Lavrov concluded by underlining that Western nations, especially the United States, are well aware that any genuine dialogue on European security cannot exclude Russia.
He described attempts to do so as unrealistic and ultimately fruitless.
