RSF Attacks Key Locations in Khartoum
(MENAFN) The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched assaults on important targets in Sudan's capital on Tuesday, including Khartoum International Airport and a converter station, local sources reported.
According to a news agency, which cited eyewitness accounts, over eight explosions were heard in and around the airport.
The Civil Aviation Authority had announced on Monday that domestic flights at Khartoum International Airport would resume starting Wednesday, following a 30-month hiatus due to the ongoing conflict.
The local reports described the strike as "an apparent attempt to disrupt the reopening of the airport after more than two years of closure."
Field reports indicated that the Sudanese military successfully intercepted several drones, while others managed to reach their intended targets, triggering panic in nearby areas, the news outlet noted.
There was no immediate statement from either the Sudanese army or the RSF in response to these reports.
In March, the Sudanese military declared it had regained control of Khartoum airport, along with several other military, security facilities, and districts in the eastern and southern parts of the capital, marking the first such success since the outbreak of the conflict.
Since the war began in April 2023, both the Sudanese army and RSF have been locked in violent conflict, resulting in more than 20,000 deaths and displacing 14 million people, according to the United Nations and local authorities.
