Typhoon Fung-wong Hits Taiwan's Pingtung Region, Alerts Issued

(MENAFN) Typhoon Fung-wong struck Taiwan's Pingtung region Wednesday evening, triggering widespread alerts across multiple counties as the system rapidly weakened upon landfall.

The storm's center struck the southern locality at approximately 7:40 p.m., prompting swift meteorological response from Taiwan's weather monitoring agencies. The 26th tropical cyclone to develop during the 2025 Pacific typhoon season quickly transitioned to tropical depression status following its terrestrial impact.

Coastal and exposed areas face particular danger, with meteorological authorities implementing a strong wind warning for Penghu County residents. The system's moisture has generated substantial precipitation threats spanning a broad geographic area.

Multiple regions are now under alert for torrential rainfall conditions. Taiwan's meteorological authorities have flagged Keelung, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung as high-risk zones, with elevated mountainous terrain surrounding Taipei also vulnerable to intense downpours driven by the typhoon's remnant circulation.

The economic toll from agricultural sectors has already surfaced, with preliminary damage assessments revealing significant losses. Taiwan's agricultural authorities documented crop and farming infrastructure damage totaling 11.22 million New Taiwan dollars—approximately 360,000 U.S. dollars—as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, before the system's full impact concluded.

Emergency management officials continue monitoring the depression's trajectory as residual weather impacts persist across the island.
