Trump Administration Weighs Military Option in Greenland

(MENAFN) The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that it is considering a "range of options" to acquire Greenland, including the possible use of American military forces, according to the White House.

"President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region," White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in response to an inquiry from a news agency.

"The President and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal," Leavitt added.

This statement followed Trump’s repeated proposals to secure the island for strategic reasons.
Just one day after the U.S. military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, Trump renewed his call for Greenland’s takeover, citing "national security" concerns.

“We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it,” he said when asked about potential U.S. action regarding the territory.

Greenland, an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark, has consistently rejected suggestions of transferring sovereignty to the United States.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has urged Trump to "stop the threats."
