The incident preceded a Sunday announcement by the U.S. Federal Reserve revealing that Chairman Jerome Powell faces a criminal investigation by federal prosecutors concerning the central bank's multi-billion-dollar headquarters renovation initiative.
In an official statement published on the Federal Reserve's website, Powell disclosed that the Department of Justice delivered grand jury subpoenas to the Fed on Friday, "threatening a criminal indictment related to my testimony before the Senate Banking Committee last June. That testimony concerned in part a multi-year project to renovate historic Federal Reserve office buildings."
