According to reports, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said during a press briefing that Claudio Cordone, the deputy special envoy for Syria, recently concluded a visit to the country where he highlighted the significance of the arrest.
“a significant moment of accountability for the country.”
Dujarric stated that the UN supports ongoing efforts to hold accountable those responsible for alleged international crimes in Syria, emphasizing that justice processes should prioritize victims and their families.
"We welcome all efforts and steps taken towards ensuring accountability of all those responsible for international crimes potentially committed in Syria, with a view to placing the victims and their families at the center of justice," said Dujarric.
He further explained that transitional justice must be comprehensive and structured within a solid legal framework that addresses truth-seeking, accountability, reconciliation, reparations, and guarantees against future violations.
Dujarric also noted that communities affected by the conflict should play an active role in shaping any meaningful transitional justice process.
“affected communities must also have a genuine voice in shaping serious transitional justice strategy.”
