UN Nuclear Chief Urges Backing for NPT as Global Review Begins

(MENAFN) The head of the UN nuclear watchdog has called on world governments to reaffirm their support for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), as a major review conference opened at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday.

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told delegates that the treaty remains one of the most significant legal and political agreements in modern international relations, noting its long-standing global reach since coming into force in 1970 and being adopted by 191 countries.

“We are here to review one of the most important instruments in international law and in international politics as a whole,” Grossi said.

Describing the agreement as “a beacon of certainty in a world of thinning international norms,” he argued that the treaty continues to serve as a rare stabilizing framework amid escalating geopolitical tensions, ongoing conflicts, and growing fragmentation in international relations. He also urged member states to strengthen their commitment and support the conference leadership during the coming discussions.

Grossi pointed to what he described as encouraging progress in global non-proliferation efforts, suggesting that the world is close to achieving near-universal participation in international nuclear oversight arrangements.

He also highlighted a significant global shift toward nuclear energy, noting that interest in nuclear power is rising across all regions. According to him, demand is expanding beyond traditional nuclear states and is now emerging “in every continent,” reflecting a broader transformation in global energy priorities.
